Project Type:
Saint William of York Church
Project Information : Del Mar, CA
Client : Shelly Hyndman
Awards : 2006 Cornerstone Award
Located on Del Mar trails road in San Diego, the Church of St. William of York overlooks the hills. The Church came together elegantly, achieved by collaboration between visionary architect Shelly Hyndman and T.B. Penick & Sons quality and expertise in concrete.
T.B Penick worked with Hyndman to come up with the most cost effective way of creating a beautiful and elegant church. A striking and welcoming front entrance was the outcome of using alternating pattern of textured design of random stone and aggregate concrete. The pattern is tied together by a rich band of seeded Mexican pebbles. Inside, a similar texture of random stone pattern was used to achieve design continuity. The sanctuary in the center was highlighted and detailed with a graphic pattern achieved by careful sandblasting and Reactive Coloration. This design continues and wraps around the entire sanctuary. The seeded Mexican pebbles were also set around the baptismal font, such that the structure is accentuated by the bold shapes of the pebbles.
The design of natural stone both outside and inside with T.B. Penick’s Texture Concrete System and the interior graphics patterns created with Reactive Coloration gave the church of St. William of York the refine details and elegance without the higher cost of hand-laid mosaics.
