Houston Rail Trail

Project Information : Various Stations – Metro Rail North line, Houston, TX
Client : Metropolitan Transit Authority

This project has more than 20 platforms with 58,000 square feet. The vison for this project was to create an experience for the riders of the Metro station.  The Metropolitan Authority wanted to create an enjoyable ride for the everyday users by showcasing artwork at each platform.  Each platform is said to celebrate the character of each neighborhood along the route. These platforms featured many systems, including Lithocrete Glass, and Aggregate. LithoMosaic, saw cuts, and stain.

The most challenging part of this project was that Penick was given renderings from the various artists on their design for each platform. From those renderings Penick had to come up with ideas on how to create their design in concrete.  Some of the artists actually worked with our in house artist Amanda Conahan to create their vision for the various LithoMosaics created. Amanda had to have various conference calls with the artists to make sure everyone was on the same page. As well as to discuss color choices, and to make sure the artists felt Amanda was achieving their design intent through Mosaics.

This project is only the first phase of the Rail Trail; Penick is in the process of the second phase. Things are going just as smoothly as the first phase of this project.
